A Coach Driven by Passion, Purpose, and Progress

It all started when….

A Coach Driven by Passion, Purpose, and Progress

Rainer Maria Rilke’s words have inspired me for years: “If, when you wake up in the morning, you can think of nothing but writing, then you are a writer.” For me, this resonates deeply—with coaching. It’s a reminder that when you’re consumed by passion, it defines you.

As a Head Coach and mentor, my purpose is to help players and coaches grow, express themselves, and reach their full potential. Whether on the training ground or in a match, I enjoy experimenting, collaborating, and working toward a common goal. Every game is an opportunity to stretch, challenge, and develop players. This passion fuels my drive to innovate, grow, and achieve more in every role I take on.

Over the years, I’ve worn many hats—scout, coach, Head Coach, Head of Coaching, and even Academy Manager. Each role has given me a unique perspective on development and performance. These experiences have sharpened my ability to connect with players, coaches, and stakeholders, tailoring my communication to empower growth. The results speak for themselves: countless players have progressed to professional football, a testament to the methods and dedication behind the work.

My coaching journey began in 2001, fueled by a lifelong love of football. After leaving college, I contacted local clubs, eager to observe and learn. Oldham Athletic answered, sparking a 22-year journey with their Academy. From assisting with youth teams to leading the under-9s, I honed my skills, gained experience, and understood the importance of nurturing young talent.

Beyond youth coaching, I’ve embraced opportunities at the semi-professional level. As reserve team coach and manager for clubs like Chadderton FC and Woodley Sports, I guided players toward first-team football, bridging the gap between potential and achievement.

One of my most rewarding experiences was coaching the under-16 elite cerebral palsy Northwest squad during the 2011/12 season. We developed players for the England pathway that year and clinched the National Champions title. This experience taught me the power of adaptability, inclusivity, and the universal principles of great coaching.

Continuous learning is at the heart of my journey. From earning my UEFA A Licence to completing the Advanced Youth Award and pursuing an MSc in Sport Coaching at Leeds Beckett University, I’ve committed myself to mastering the science and art of coaching. These milestones have deepened my understanding of tactical and technical development while emphasising the importance of tailoring methods to fit the unique needs of players and teams.

But coaching isn’t just about football. My passion extends across sports—cricket, rugby, golf, and even equestrian pursuits (inspired by my wonderful wife, Amy). These experiences offer fresh perspectives and broaden my understanding of athletic development. Beyond sports, I love reading, travelling, and staying active, believing that a balanced life fuels excellence in coaching.

As I look to the future, I’m ready to take on new challenges, collaborate with others, and continue pushing boundaries. Whether through shared ideas, coaching events, or partnerships, I believe teamwork and knowledge exchange create the greatest results.

Let’s connect. Together, we can shape the next generation of players, teams, and leaders.
